- There are several methods to record a student's behavior or the success of interventions and supports in the classroom.
- Event Recording is when a teacher counts how many times a behavior occurs during a specific time. Tick marks, a handheld counter, or other systems allow the teacher to discreetly tally the behavior to later be recorded in her files.
- Duration and Latency Recording occurs when a teacher either records how long a behavior lasts (how long a student has a tantrum) or the delay between a behavior (how long it takes a student follow a direct instruction).
- Interval Recording allows a teacher to check on a student's behavior at set intervals and record, with a + or - whether the behavior is occurring at that moment. This is ideal for teachers who want an overview of how often a student is on-task throughout a lesson.
- Anecdotal Records are the most time-consuming type of observation and involve creating a "narrative of the events that took place during the observation" (p. 246-247). Teachers should only record the observable facts from the event and avoid adding their own interpretation into the recording.
- Planned Ignoring is a useful method for lessening the occurrence of an attention-getting misbehavior. Student may continue to act out if the behavior elicits a response from the teacher. By ignoring the bad behavior and praising the correct behavior, a teacher can lessen and eventually eradicate the disturbance. Because it takes time to work, planned ignoring should only be used in certain situations that can be gradually changed.
- Bulletin boards enhance the classroom environment in different ways. They can be:
- Decorative: make the room attractive and may be part of a theme.
- Motivational: display students' work and show progress.
- Instructional: teaches new material and maintains knowledge of things previously learned.
- Manipulative: involve materials that students can "manipulate to learn new skills" (p. 274).
