Chapter 10

  • Phonemic Awareness is the processing and manipulation of sounds that make up words as well as the understanding that written and spoken language are linked.
    • Teachers can promote phonemic awareness by motivating students to read, reading aloud books with pictures and patterns, and involving families in reading development.
  • A writer's workshop is where students receive feedback from teachers and peers on their work.  Students are able to choose any topic they want, and the only direct instruction time should be limited as the writing should take up most of the workshop time. Work can be published when completed and kept in the classroom or sent home.
  • Using word processors with students has a lot of benefits for some students. Spell checkers easily point out spelling errors, and word cueing programs can help struggling students. Teachers must be careful to teach students how to use these programs in a useful, responsible way.
