Chapter 6

• When students transition from the special education classroom to the general education classroom, a transenvironmental programming model can be used to ease the student into new routines, such as homework, classroom rules, social engagement, and access to materials. The special ed and general classroom teacher should collaborate to coordinate this transition.
  
• Service Learning programs are when students perform and reflect on experiences that benefit the community and promote learning. These real-life experiences develop skill sets that students will need to be productive and empathetic citizens. Teachers can push to have these programs implemented at their schools.
  
• All students need positive role models. Whether through a buddy, mentor, protege, or affinity groups students can grow and become more comfortable with themselves if they have access to a caring, responsible adult.
